Philosophy & Symbolism

P H I L O S O P H Y

The philosophy behind the work is the harmony,
balance and beauty of opposites
also known as polarity.

NEUTRAL + COLOR
LIGHT + DARK
MATTE + SHINY
ROUGHS + SMOOTH
OUTER + INNER
FULL + EMPTY
MATERIAL + VOID
SOLID + DELICATE
EARTH + AIR
VISIBLE + INVISIBLE

PRACTICAL + BEAUTIFUL
ELEGANT + RUSTIC
MINIMAL + WARM
RUSTIC + MODERN

Humble Ceramics is about simplicity, imperfections, cracks and warps.
Humble Ceramics is about embracing imperfections
and falling in love with those so-called "flaws".
Humble Ceramics is about polarity.
Humble Ceramics is rustic yet modern.
Humble Ceramics will come alive in your environment.
Humble Ceramics is timeless!

August 25, 20IO was the first day of a 6-week pottery class
which I took as a chance to experience something new.
It was an opportunity to spend a little more time
with one of my friends, so why not try it !
I was curious, but had no real interest in pottery and yet, here we are.
I didn't choose pottery; pottery chose me!
Pottery has become my very own Pi (3.1416) ...
a window into a world of endless possibilities!

The name Humble Ceramics came from the relationship
that arose when working with clay:
H U M B L E
It was the title of a blog I created
to communicate my latest "passion" to family on the other side of the globe.
And became a sort of visual diary before Instagram was on my radar.

Having started the class in 2OIO, firing to Cone IO,
with the studio celebrating its IOth year anniversary as I joined,
it started to create a pattern that was hard to ignore.

When the time came to design the logo, it was very clear:
keeping it clean and simple, black and white,
the H within the C also represented the I and the O - binary!
And when you turn the logo on its side and center it,
it shows the Japanese symbol ENSO*
and the H which becomes a I (one)
also represents the Gemini sign ... my sign, a dual sign!
That is why polarity and the harmonious fusion of opposites
are very important parts of my work and aesthetic.
That concept also mirrors an internal struggle to maintain balance
while being pulled in so many different directions.

So if our work reflects the depth of our subconscious,
its metaphors reflect what our soul craves the most
(at least in this incarnation) ...
in this case: discreet beauty, quiet power, clean simple lines,
well-defined boundaries, complex simplicity,
a harmonious fusion of opposites,
the perfect harmony between feminine and masculine energy,
merging what seems like contrary styles or eras,
being centered and grounded,
the perfect fusion of 5 elements.

The physical work evolved from my limitations as a potter
which forced me to keep shapes as simple as possible.
I also wanted to get to know my clay and my glazes,
keeping the 1 to 1 ratio: 1 clay 1 glaze 1 shape.

When you see the roundness of the piece with the straight edge,
you recognize once again the binary aspect of the work:
I (straight) and O (round).
Everything interconnects - just like the Fibonacci sequence
that weaves the past, the present and the future:
a great visual and symbolic metaphor for growth!

In short ... that's how Humble Ceramics was born!

Sacred vessels and objects full of prayers and healing intentions
that can be buried for 150 years or used in your daily rituals ...
the work of Humble Ceramics is made with that consciousness and intention:
meant to raise the frequency of the environment around it,
the food placed in it, or the objects being held in or around it ...
while at the same time creating a matrix of healing for the planet!

The weight of any Humble Ceramics piece is purposely heavy.
When you hold a Humble Ceramics vessel,
you'll instantly feel grounded and brought into the present;
into the 'now'.
Notice how "in the now" your connection
with the piece that you are holding,
and what is placed in it, changes!
Notice how your relationship to it all shifts!
Humble Ceramics is about that mindfulness.

We might be growing quickly but we must also grow mindfully
and that is what we are working towards everyday with your support **.

** “When you buy from an independent artist,
you are buying hundreds of hours of experimentation
and thousands of failures.

You are buying days, weeks, months, years of frustration
and moments of pure joy.
You are buying nights of worry about paying the rent,
having enough money to eat ...

You aren’t just buying a thing,
you are buying a piece of heart, part of a soul,
a private moment in someone’s life.

Most importantly,
you are buying that artist more time
to do something they are truly passionate about;
something that makes all the above
worth the fear and the doubt;
something that puts the life into the living.”

– Rebekah Joy Plett , Artist

How amazing would it be if we could turn our humble studio
into a green manufacturing studio;
giving back a % of our profits to our employees, our community,
kiva.org (micro loans) and other amazing non-profit organizations
that address water, organic & non-gmo agriculture,
ethical mindful and compassionate farming,
ethical treatment of animals,
empowerment of women across the globe
and so forth ...
The more successful we become, the more we can give back
while making beautiful yet mindful and meaningful products.

God/Allah is the ultimate artist,
we just channel their inspiration through our own lense!

*"In Zen Buddhism, an ensō (円相 , "circle" )
is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes
to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.
The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe,
and mu (the void)."
